Representative Nancy Pelosi is the Leader the Democrats Need

Representative Nancy Pelosi has become a force in the U.S. House of Representatives. She was the first female to be elected Speaker of the House and through the years, she has established herself as a no-nonsense politician. Representative Pelosi has become one of the most powerful women in Washington D.C., and it seems nothing will stop her. With today’s vote, Pelosi’s candidacy is at stake.

When Representative Pelosi became Speaker in 2007, she made history as the first woman to lead the Democratic party in the House of Representatives.  Although she became the house minority leader in 2011, Representative Pelosi has demonstrated that she has what it takes to lead a party. When she was speaker, she played major roles in the passing of the Affordable Care Act, Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal Act, and the Tax Relief Act.

Despite apparent success, Representative Pelosi’s career has been repeatedly criticized by politicians on both sides of the aisle. She has been called “too old”, and in numerous election cycles, the GOP has labeled her as being an elitist and has used her to paint a negative picture of the democratic party. Although she has faced criticism from both the right and left, she has not let it affect her. By establishing herself as a powerful politician, she has used her power to further her party’s agenda, as well as encourage women to take on large roles and stand their ground.

Representative Pelosi is the political leadership needed in Washington D.C. right now. Because of the current political climate, the Republican and Democratic parties are almost always in some type of fight, or in a shutdown. While Representative Pelosi cannot single-handedly resolve the constant conflict in the House, her motivation and experience is a start. Her record has proven she can get work done, is not afraid of standing for her beliefs, and going into a crucial presidential election cycle, she has the opportunity to rally democrats in 2020. During the 2018 midterm election, Representative Pelosi was predicting a democratic win in the house, and was seen as a symbol of the party. Aside from the midterms, Representative Pelosi has made a point during the Trump presidency to stand up to the administration. In a current political climate where politicians are not willing to oppose the president, Representative Pelosi’s ability and willingness to face Trump is part of what makes her an important politician in Washington.

Although Representative Pelosi has received the Democratic nomination for the Speaker of the House, people within her own party thought it was time for someone new. Along with the idea of someone else being speaker, many newly elected Representatives, as well as a few incumbents, voiced their distaste by stating they would not be voting Representative Pelosi to Speaker because they did not support her. “Back in May, I made a commitment to the residents of NJ-11 that I would seek new leaders in Congress who were going to help us move forward on the priorities here in our district. For that reason, today in caucus I did not support Nancy Pelosi for Speaker of the House,” said New Jersey Representative Mikie Sherrill.

Representative Pelosi has emerged as a new role model for a new generation. In addition to her political achievements, she has become a symbol of female power in Washington. In an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, Representative Pelosi said that she wants “women to see that you do not get pushed around.” She has shown time and time again that she is not willing to back down from anything. She gave an eight hour speech on the house floor defending the DACA program and reading testimonies of Dreamers. Most recently, she has been working tirelessly during the almost two week government shutdown.

Prior to the current government shutdown, Representative Pelosi made the news because of an intense exchange her and Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer had with President Trump and Vice President Pence. The meeting topic was the funding for the President’s border wall, and the footage from the meeting displayed Representative Pelosi’s power and confidence. She displayed her ability to convey her point without lashing out at the others in the room, she stood her ground, and after the meeting, a picture of her leaving the oval office with Senator Schumer went viral because she expressed accomplishment. Since the meeting took place, Representative Pelosi has continued to hold her stance and not give in to the $5 billion being asked for the border wall. As she nears officially becoming Speaker of the House, it is clear she is ready to lead the new democratic majority.

Becoming the first female elected to the Speaker of the House, setting example for the next generation of women leaders, and being a political force, Representative Nancy Pelosi has worked her way up the ladder and has become one of the most powerful women in Washington D.C. In this time of political uncertainty, she is needed more than ever.
